The Skinny Epidemic - Why Are We Shrinking Ourselves Yet Again?

Christine Chessman & Ela Law

Send us a text

Skinny is back.  With a vengeance.

We're furious.  Listen, we are very much speaking from a position of privilege in terms of both being in straight-sized bodies, but approaching fitness and health through an anti-oppressive and inclusive lens, this is simply not good news.

Eating disorders and disordered eating are very much on the rise, as is body dissatisfaction, and the very sad truth is, is that there is no quick fix when it comes to our fitness,our bodies and indeed our confidence.  Sure we can lose weight in the short term but what about sustainability. What about the impact of continual weight fluctuations on our health.

Confidence is not waiting for us at our goal weight.

There is nuance here.  For some folks, the new GLP-1 drugs have been beneficial and more and more research is being done into their impact on binge eating disorders.

We discuss all of this and more in today's episode.  It is a spicy one and we'd absolutely LOVE your comments or feedback.

We start the episode with the following quote from the wonderful Abbie Attwood:

"There's something unbearably cruel about living in a world where millions of people go hungry because they have no choice, while millions more go hungry because they've been told that they should."

00:00:02.160 --> 00:00:19.070
Ela Law: We want people to be. Well, of course we do, and I know there are. Some people say you don't owe anyone health. I don't know if I agree with that, because I would say everybody really would like to feel well and be healthy rather than live with chronic illness.

2
00:00:19.180 --> 00:00:21.150
Ela Law: but I think we should focus on that.

3
00:00:21.150 --> 00:00:21.850
Christine Chessman: Hmm.

4
00:00:22.140 --> 00:00:36.290
Ela Law: Not on well, make yourself as thin as possible, and potentially actually decrease your life expectancy and your health, because we don't know what's going to happen if you take those drugs, or if you have bariatric surgery, or you know all of those things.

5
00:00:36.290 --> 00:00:40.630
Christine Chessman: If I if I'm not unwell, I don't want to be taking drugs. No.

6
00:00:40.760 --> 00:00:43.909
Christine Chessman: if if I can possibly not take. So I want.

7
00:00:43.910 --> 00:00:44.410
Ela Law: Again.

8
00:00:44.410 --> 00:00:46.770
Christine Chessman: Few drugs as I can possibly take.

9
00:00:47.210 --> 00:00:51.530
Christine Chessman: No, I mean I I you don't want to be on them. If you don't have to be.

10
00:00:51.530 --> 00:00:53.280
Ela Law: No, no, exactly.

11
00:00:53.280 --> 00:01:01.029
Christine Chessman: I mean, and there's anyway do you know a comedian called Kyla Cobbler? She's an Irish comedian, is she? She wrote.

12
00:01:01.030 --> 00:01:02.259
Ela Law: Fake, Belle.

13
00:01:02.260 --> 00:01:07.350
Christine Chessman: She did a tour with Tommy Tiernan, but she did a whole reel on

14
00:01:07.690 --> 00:01:10.930
Christine Chessman: Skinny. Oh, I hear Skinny's back in.

15
00:01:11.410 --> 00:01:11.990
Ela Law: Right.

16
00:01:11.990 --> 00:01:19.390
Christine Chessman: Guinea can get fucked. Excuse my language, but she's got a really funny reel that she wants to be. Let's all be furious and jacked

17
00:01:19.570 --> 00:01:39.819
Christine Chessman: rather than skinny, and like like, let's stand up to this. She was talking about being, you know, the women of Ireland standing on the coast when people came, the invaders came to attack, and we looked so scary they turned around and she was like talking about. Let's let's like, come on, let's get strong. Why are we being? Why are we wanting to kind of fade away? No, we.

18
00:01:39.820 --> 00:01:40.630
Ela Law: No.

19
00:01:40.630 --> 00:01:44.779
Christine Chessman: Take up space and get mad. Get angry about all of this.

20
00:01:45.110 --> 00:01:47.900
Ela Law: Oh, I need to see that real! Was that a recent one.

21
00:01:47.900 --> 00:01:55.629
Christine Chessman: It's really good. She's hilarious. I've posted it. It's it's her Monday motivation. Let's get furious and jacked rather than skinny.

22
00:01:55.630 --> 00:01:58.110
Ela Law: Brilliant. Should we link in the show notes to her.

23
00:01:58.110 --> 00:02:03.467
Christine Chessman: Account absolutely sounds good, but anyway, we could go on for ages, but

24
00:02:03.850 --> 00:02:14.000
Ela Law: I think this is probably not. The last time we'll talk about this, and it would be really interesting to actually hear from anyone listening to this. If you have your own experience with.

25
00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:14.850
Christine Chessman: Yeah.

26
00:02:14.850 --> 00:02:20.279
Ela Law: Ones, or actually actively making a decision not to take them any.

27
00:02:20.865 --> 00:02:21.450
Christine Chessman: Percent.

28
00:02:21.450 --> 00:02:23.709
Ela Law: Would be really interesting to hear about it.

29
00:02:23.710 --> 00:02:32.279
Christine Chessman: And also again, we have to say, we don't have experience of living in a larger body. So anybody with experience, please.

30
00:02:32.280 --> 00:02:32.870
Ela Law: Hmm.

31
00:02:33.080 --> 00:02:34.690
Christine Chessman: Again, tell us what.

32
00:02:35.140 --> 00:02:36.659
Christine Chessman: Your feeling about glp-one,

33
00:02:38.330 --> 00:02:40.069
Ela Law: We are here to learn.

34
00:02:40.330 --> 00:03:09.800
Ela Law: Yeah. And I think it probably came out quite clearly that we have. No, you know, it's not that we're judging. Glp one S. We're not judging people who take them. We are just angry at the fact that society is pushing them on people and pushing that thin ideal. Yet again, do you know what it's that nineties fashion, isn't it? Alongside that stupid nineties, actual fashion which drives me nuts?

35
00:03:10.320 --> 00:03:13.950
Ela Law: Can I get a non strappy non cropped top. Please.

36
00:03:13.950 --> 00:03:19.050
Christine Chessman: Yeah. And what happened to those body things, you know, the things with like the baby grows.

37
00:03:19.050 --> 00:03:20.510
Ela Law: Oh, please!

38
00:03:20.510 --> 00:03:22.250
Christine Chessman: Why are we still wearing body suits.

39
00:03:22.250 --> 00:03:22.870
Ela Law: Sleeve.

40
00:03:22.870 --> 00:03:26.830
Christine Chessman: 4 of those at a time in the nineties, and it wasn't a good look.

41
00:03:26.830 --> 00:03:31.310
Ela Law: It wasn't good luck then, and it's not a good look now. No, thank you. Bye.

42
00:03:31.310 --> 00:03:35.489
Christine Chessman: I mean, do you remember going for a way and then trying to like rebutton? All of you.

43
00:03:35.750 --> 00:03:36.830
Ela Law: I was fucking.

44
00:03:36.830 --> 00:03:38.300
Ela Law: Why are they back?

45
00:03:38.300 --> 00:03:41.130
Ela Law: Don't know. I don't know. Well, people are well.

46
00:03:41.130 --> 00:03:44.899
Ela Law: they just need to recycle ideas, and the skinny idea is not a good one to.

47
00:03:44.900 --> 00:03:51.209
Christine Chessman: I always. I always tell my teams like every bit of music they listen to. It's a sample from our generation.

48
00:03:51.210 --> 00:03:53.940
Ela Law: Absolutely, you need a bit of originality.

49
00:03:53.940 --> 00:04:00.849
Ela Law: Yeah, yeah, I think we're all numb and dumbed down so we can't actually come up with original thought anymore.

50
00:04:01.250 --> 00:04:03.610
Christine Chessman: Oh, we're so cynical and and.

51
00:04:03.610 --> 00:04:05.110
Ela Law: We are angry today. I think

52
00:04:05.730 --> 00:04:07.920
Ela Law: some punch bag now, and let it.

53
00:04:07.920 --> 00:04:23.930
Christine Chessman: Exactly exactly, anyway. Thank you for listening, and we appreciate you more than you know, and we're going to take a little summer hiatus. But it's not a real hiatus, because I'm going to be posting and previous episodes from ages ago, which we will re-release.

54
00:04:24.340 --> 00:04:27.369
Christine Chessman: Which are all fantastic. We've had some amazing guests.

55
00:04:27.370 --> 00:04:31.340
Ela Law: Oh, God, yeah, yeah. You had some before I even joined. I mean.

56
00:04:31.340 --> 00:04:31.880
Christine Chessman: Oh yes!

57
00:04:31.880 --> 00:04:32.920
Ela Law: Definitely.

58
00:04:32.920 --> 00:04:33.700
Christine Chessman: Add some questions.

59
00:04:33.700 --> 00:04:35.110
Ela Law: Asking out for those.

60
00:04:35.110 --> 00:04:46.549
Christine Chessman: And we've got Stephanie Michelle on our return, which I am incredibly excited about, and we will post lots more about it. But for now thank you for listening, and we will see you soon.

61
00:04:46.550 --> 00:04:48.030
Ela Law: A great summer bye.
